Shuga är en lättsam och snyggt producerad historia om några medelklassynglingar i dagens och nattens Nairobi – där sex är en viktig ingrediens och där HIV-skuggan inte alltid tas på allvar. Om regissören
Teboho Mahlatsi, från Sydafrika, började sin karriär som manusförfattare. Hans dokumentär Ghetto Diaries gjordes för sydafrikansk tv, liksom den populära ungdomsserien Yizo Yizo (1999-2004). CinemAfrica har tidigare visat hans kortfilmer Mekgeo and the Stick Fighter (2006) och Portrait of a Young Man Drowning (1999). Shuga är ursprungligen en tv-serie, producerad av MTV Networks Africa och prisbelönades vid World Media Festival i Hamburg 2010.English version
Shuga
A peek into the lives of a group of hip Nairobi youngsters. Ayira is a young advertising student who knows how to use her looks and sex appeal to achieve her goals. Though she loves her boyfriend, she is afraid of letting love stand in the way of her dreams. When truth catches up with Ayira and her friends, they are forced to realize that nobody is immortal.
Shuga is a light and elegant story about middle class youth in Nairobi today, and by night, where sex plays a big role and the threat of HIV is not always taken seriously. With music, playful editing, and talented acting the film asks universal questions about life and love.
The director Teboho Mahlatsi was born in South Africa in 1974. He started out as a scriptwriter. He has made the documentary Ghetto Diaries (1996) and the popular TV-series Yizo Yizo (1999 – 2004) that revolves around a township school. CinemAfrica has previously screened his short films Mekgeo and the Stick Fighter (2006) and Portrait of a Young Man Drowning (1999). Shuga was produced by MTV Networks Africa and won a Gold Award at the World Media Festival in Hamburg in 2010.
