David Constantin / 2022 / Mauritius / Drama, Comedy / 93 min / Creole
Far from the luxury hotels in Mauritius, David Constantin’s second feature film, Simin Setwal, unfolds. Ronaldo is an impatient young man seeking new horizons as he sets out to search for his father, the reserved and alcoholic Bolom. This leads to an encounter with Aleja, an Asian migrant worker fleeing slave-like conditions in a textile factory. Under the dark, starry skies and primarily in the local creole language, their fragile life stories unfold in many ways. The film is a unique portrayal of the working-class conditions, social realities, and local culture on the island. The film has already won four international awards, including at the African film festival Fespaco.
