Akuol de Mabior / 2022 / South Sudan, South Africa, Kenya / Documentary / 85 min / Dinka, Arabic och English
Rebecca Nyandeng de Mabior is known as the mother of South Sudan. The country gained independence in 2011 and has been at war for most of its short history. As peace in South Sudan hangs in the balance, Rebecca and her two daughters return home from exile. The director and one of Rebecca’s daughters, Akuol, grapple with understanding what it means to call oneself South Sudanese, as she and her sister were born and raised in exile. She decides to follow her mother behind the camera and is forced to confront her own fears. In the documentary, we are invited into a cross-generational conversation that highlights their struggle to reconcile family and country. Akuol discovers that her mother’s deepest yearning is for her children and the children of her compatriots to lead meaningful lives in South Sudan. But what does it mean to call South Sudan home?
We end the movie with a Q&A.
