Meet PR§DNT

This years poster is made by Rendani Nemakhavhani also known as PR§DNT HONEY. Nemakhavhani is a Johannesburg-based illustrator and art director who’s work is inspired
by African aesthetics and seeks to create ongoing conversations about the representation
of black women in South Africa. Nemakhavhani’s artistry is considered an important voice
adding to Cinemafrica.  We had the pleasure to ask Rendani Nemakhavhani some questions. 

What is important to you in your artistic expression?
Being able to make work as freely as possible is very important to me.  

If the South African art scene had a mood what would it be?
Vibrant and political. I suppose that most art in the world has political themes, but ours is quite different. It’s so layered and complicated. South African artists know who to communicate these messages so well in their work. And it can be subliminal, which makes it all that much more amazing. 

In what way is the current political situation expressed in South African art?
There are a variety of artists who have found many different ways to express the political distress that exists in our country. We have fine artists like Lady Skollie and fashion designers like Wanda Lephoto, then we have filmmakers like Monde who’ve made use of these different modes of expressing what is/ has happened in our country.

Who inspires you?
People. I love listening to people’s stories and experiencing cultures that are foreign to me.  

Cinemafrica has been working globally with film for some time now but this year we also wanted to connect our visual expression with Africa. How is it for you to work globally?
I love working on global work because I get to challenge myself. I also always get to meet new people. I feel that these kinds of experiences open me up to a world that is bigger than the one I currently exist in.  

 Who is your favorite African director?
Right now it’s definitely Monde
