Issa Elkogali Häggström

Q&A with Issa Elkogali Häggström, Film producer and former chairperson of CinemAfrica on her screeing her co-production “GoodBye Julia”.

Hi Issra, who are you and what is your relationship with CinemAfrica? I am a Sudanese born multidisciplinary artist. My relationship with Cinemafrica started in 2012 when they screened my directorial debut, the short documentary In Search of Hip Hop at Bio Rio in Hornstull. I served for 6 years in the program group and 2 years as Chair of the board.

Can you tell us a bit about who you are and how you became involved in Goodbye Julia as a co-producer?
I was asked to join Amjad Abuelala (Station Films, Producer and Director of You Will Die at 20) and Mohamed Kordofani ( Director of Goodbye Julia) as a co-producer because they were interested in applying for development funding from Malmö Arab Film Festival. We pitched together in competition with Boy From Heaven and other major Arabic language film projects for development funding and won!

For those who may not be familiar with Sudan’s history, what would you say is the most important thing to understand when watching Goodbye Julia?

Sudan has had a tumultuous political history due to several factors, many rooted in the colonial relationship between the many diverse tribes that share a national identity and the unequal distribution of power and wealth. The film isn’t a history lesson per se. The story offers an intimate look at the nuances of the inequalities in society. Inequalities between the diverse peoples Sudan, and between the sexes as well. The story is a well crafted layered look at people we have not met before on the silver screen.

What reaction do you hope the film will evoke in the international audience? Could you tell us more about that? The film has had a great impact on international audiences and has won multiple-awards on every continent. Audiences have responded well to the intimacy and intensity of the storytelling and the beauty of the pictures.  (For a list of awards please see the press kit )

The film has gained significant international attention—congratulations!
Make sure to catch “Good bye Julie” on the 26th of October at Zita.
